Site dishes saucy ratings of barbecue purveyors

It's Tuesday, the perfect day for barbecue fans to plot where to execute this weekend's carnivorous cravings. A site to see: Ralph's BBQ Joint Rating Page. It's a basic but informative review of barbecue haunts in metro Atlanta and across the nation, written by Ralph Fowler, a telecommunications engineer, ham radio expert and Cobb County resident for 40 years.

The ratings (a low of 0 to a high of 5) cover meat, side items, sauce, service and atmosphere. Among the local places grazed and graded: The Rib Ranch in Marietta and Buckhead (thumbs up); Old South BBQ in Smyrna ("thumbs up from me --- for the past 29 years"); and Red's Backwoods BBQ in Kennesaw (thumbs down).

So how do Ralph's reviews rate? We read his Rib Ranch review and went to the Marietta restaurant for Father's Day. He gave it a bunch of 4's but nailed it on poor service --- a problem since fixed, he added. And he's right. Our waitress kept a 19-month-old gainfully amused while Mom and Dad ate some of the best barbecue this side of personal favorite Sticky Fingers (Chattanooga and Charleston, S.C.). Oh, and add a perfect 5 for those chilled Lone Stars at the ranch.
